I think I have completed the Hood pilot! I'm really glad. I've been working away on relatively minor edits that need to convey a lot with a little, so I've been tweaking them over and over again, but I think I'm at a place where I'm satisfied. Good thing, too, as today is the day I said I'd be sending it along. That's a pretty big accomplishment and I am happy and proud!

So I'm posting another scene from it, one that had to be tweaked based on feedback from the reading dinner. This scene takes place after John and Marian receive the news that a manufacturing facility blew up in Day #2 - Bullseye, but reveals that John may know more about what caused it than he's saying. It also shows how most of the figures are directly from Robin Hood legend, but we're also incorporating adjacent figures from English history or historical literature-- in this case, Eleanor of Acquitaine from The Lion in Winter.

"Get the House in Order"
From the Hood pilot

INT. JOHN’S OFFICE – MORNING

John and Marian watch newscaster GAIL MERRIMAN on the large flatscreen mounted on the office wall.

MERRIMAN
Disaster struck at the Barnsdale manufacturing plant of Locksley Materials, when a freak chemical explosion not only blew out the facility, but created a major toxic spill in the surrounding town. It is unclear what caused the explosion, but the spill radius has been cordoned off by authorities as a major environmental hazard.

JOHN
Oh, Christ.

MERRIMAN
Locksley Materials is a wholly owned subsidiary of Monarch Industries, coming up on its one-year anniversary of the unsolved disappearance of CEO Richard Prince. The well-known businessman and philanthropist went missing after embarking on a humanitarian mission around the world, and has not been heard from since. The acting CEO, Prince’s brother John Prince, has not been available for comment.

John switches off the television in frustration.

MARIAN
It makes no sense. An explosion that big… what could've caused it?

JOHN
We have to get the story straight.

MARIAN
We don’t need a story, we need to find out what happened.

JOHN
There’s a team on it, but nothing’s come back yet.

MARIAN
That chemical spill and all those people… in the facility, the town—

ELEANOR (O.S.)
And in the company.

John and Marian turn to see ELEANOR PRINCE, John and Richard’s cool, elegant mother, roll in in a power chair.

ELEANOR
Quite a few jobs will be at stake. If we don’t get to the bottom of this.

MARIAN
Hello, Mrs. Prince.

JOHN
Mother. You heard.

ELEANOR
Of course I did. Marian here at least knows to keep me informed. I thought I’d come by and clear up a few questions.

JOHN
I don’t know much more than you do. If you like, I can send over a copy of the report when we have it—

ELEANOR
Thank you, but I’d rather hear things from you directly.

John takes the hint and turns to Marian.

JOHN
We’ve been up all night. Grab a bite, a nap, whatever you need. Then convene the upper management. We’ve got a lot to work out.

MARIAN
I’ll take care of it. Sir, before all this happened, I had some personal business this morning. I know this is urgent, but…

JOHN
Go take care of it. Just be back in time for the meeting.

ELEANOR
Thank you, Marian. We could use more reliable woman in management here.

Marian nods gratefully and exits.

ELEANOR
What have you done, John?

JOHN
It wasn’t my doing!

ELEANOR
Then what happened?

JOHN
Someone hit the operation! Clearly!

ELEANOR
With an environmental impact like that, we’re going to have every watchdog agency in the country on us. They’ll be digging into everything!

JOHN
Do you think I don’t know that?

ELEANOR
Then what are you going to do?

JOHN
I haven’t figured that out yet! I only heard six hours ago.

ELEANOR
And every minute you waste brings us closer to public ruin.

JOHN
There’s no hiding it. We’re going to have to… spin it somehow.

ELEANOR
That was Richard’s talent. Putting on a good face for the public.

JOHN
Well, that’s not an option right now.

ELEANOR
Unfortunately not. So you’ll have to handle it. Talent or no.

Beat.

ELEANOR
John, your father and I learned this a long time ago. They will be looking for someone to blame.

JOHN
I know.

ELEANOR
Then get the house in order.
